Education in Iraq
Iraq has the best educational system in the Mid east region in addressing both access and equality. In the early 1970s, education became public and free at all levels, and mandatory at the primary and high school level. The primary school Gross Enrollment Rate was 100% and literacy levels were high.
The universities in Iraq were established in the second half of the last century, beginning with the University of Baghdad in 1957, Al-Mustansirya University in Baghdad as well as universities in Basra, Mosul and Sulaymaniah.
Iraq’s current higher education system has more than 20 universities and 47 community colleges under the management of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. This includes 200 colleges, 800 departments, 28 research centers. The Commission for Computers and Informatics offers specialized course for postgraduates. in addition there are a lot of privet universities in Baghdad and every Iraqi state with great significant educational programs.
The offered majors in universities are: medicine, pharmacy, dental, education, arts, law, social sciences, administration, economics, business, natural sciences, engineering and technology, medical sciences, veterinary medicine, agriculture and etc...
The teaching staffs in universities have 56% male and 44% female professors.
Most the Iraqi students continue for graduate school to have their master or PhD degree, Iraqi has many Ministries that contribute in the educational Success in Iraq like, Ministry of science and technology, Ministry of higher education & scientific research and Ministry of Education.
Iraq is has the largest percentage in having doctors, pharmacists, engineers, dentists and prophesiers in the Mid east region.
