Brief Description
Advanced Web Development covers advanced Web design and production using Macromedia Dreamweaver CS4. The course includes Dreamweaver database integration (with PHP/MySQL), CSS layout, forms, Dreamweaver libraries, and Dreamweaver behaviors. Students need to understand how to use Dreamweaver (site manager, code viewer, how to make links, etc.) and should be able to create a database (any database applicaiton is fine). See entry skills for a list of skills covered in CIS 212. See the syllabus for detailed course information. If you have Access experience but have not completed the CIS 140 recommended prerequisite, contact me to find out if you have enough experience to succeed.
See Welcome Video for overview.
Learn Online or Face-to-Face
CIS 213 is offered online and face-to-face (with 2 online hours per week). Jodi will teach both the face-to-face section and the online sections in the Spring 2009 semester. You can attend class Thursday night or take the class online regardless of which section you are in, so enroll in either section.
Online students need to have access to a reliable computer with Dreamweaver CS3 or CS4 and a high bandwidth Internet connection. See How an Online Class Works for details.
Jodi uses Moodle for class management (quizzes, grades, turning in work, discussion). Moodle accounts are set up the weekend before classes begin. All course Web pages link to the Moodle login. Let Jodi know if you are unable to log in to Moodle after the first day of class with your college user name (usually first.last) and password changeme.
Spring 2010
When a section is closed, check for openings on January 15th after 2pm. Wait lists will begin January 19.
The course materials will be ready when the semester begins. You should receive a welcome email with instructions Monday, January 25. This email is sent from Moodle to the email address you provided to WebAdvisor (do you need to see how to change your WebAdvisor address?) Contact Jodi if you don't get a welcome email.
The face-to-face class will meet on Thursdays from 6:00 - 8:50pm with 2 online instructional hours per week. Online students are encouraged to attend the face-to-face class whenever they would like some in-person help.

Here's what you can do in January before class begins:
- Add the course if you have not done so - either section is fine. Please do this ASAP -- this will add you to the roster. You cannot add the class late, even if you have done all the course work. Use WebAdvisor to add this class.
- Send me an e-mail after you enroll - attach a photo (200 x 200 pixels if you know how)
- Complete the student information form
- Purchase textbook and start reading
- ONLINE STUDENTS:
- Purchase and install Dreamweaver CS4 (see collegebuys.org for academic pricing). YOU MUST HAVE ACCESS TO DREAMWEAVER CS4 or CS3 TO COMPLETE THIS CLASS! Some students use campus labs, but most install on their own computers.
- Install Firefox - (free download at mozilla.com ). Please do not disable Cookies, JavaScript, and Java
- After class begins, login to Moodle and complete the ONLINE ORIENTATION and do everything listed in WEEK 1 of the schedule.
It will probably take a few weeks to get used to how things are done. Plan to spend a little extra time at first and don't hesitate to email or stop in during office hours if you feel lost.
CIS 213 is part of a Web Development Major at Cuyamaca College in El Cajon, California. We also offer certificates in Web Design, Web Programming, and Web Server Management.
